Teen Surrenders to State Police | News
David Ranakoski, 17, of Scranton walked into the state police barracks in Dunmore holding his mother's hand, his family by his side.
Ranakoski remained silent, but roughly two dozen of his friends and classmates were present to show their support.
Ranakoski was arrested for the May 9th car crash, on Dark Region Road in Ransom Township, that killed 22-month-old Cole Hazelton.
According to prosecutors, Ranakoski was driving his car with several other teens. His vehicle slammed into the Hazeltons' Jeep.
Following the collision, the Jeep burst into flames. Cole's parents struggled to pull the toddler from the vehicle, but could not get him out.
Court papers show that Ranakoski was driving with a suspended license, and that, by his own admission, he was traveling at 60 miles per hour.
Ranakoski also stated that he smoked marijuana the day of the crash and took, "...five to ten hits off a blunt."
"There's just no words or consoling or anything that we can say to make them feel better," said assistant district attorney Robert Klein. "Our thoughts are with them, we hope they can find the strength to go on everyday knowing they lost a child like that."
